Why should we implement cross curricular instruction?
As we look around, we see the world evolving and changing, and this evolution and change is readily apparent amongst students, teachers, and education systems. Educators are striving for increased differentiation, implementation of technology, and inclusivity in their classrooms. These changes and advancements are imperative because each of us are unique individuals with our own perception of knowledge.
Over the course of my PSIII experience at Bishop O’Byrne High School, the diversity of students and learning styles is evident. I had the opportunity to engage in a very insightful conversation with a fellow teacher at the school who teaches Science 14-24. He expressed his concerns over his classroom and teaching practices becoming too isolated in their subject matter and planning of course material becoming tedious and repetitive. As a result, there was a lack in creativity and diversification in his lessons and noticed diminished engagement amongst his students. In light of his concerns, it became clear that a potential solution to this problem that so many teachers face, is the implementation of cross-curricular instruction. Currently, I am teaching foods 10 and could see how collaboration of foods and science courses could be beneficial. Perhaps, through the combination of disciplines, collaboration amongst teachers would be fostered, innovative lessons would be created, and student interest would increase. For my professional inquiry project, I am going to define cross-curricular instruction, highlight the benefits, and propose potential implementation strategies and opportunities. |
